2 East Orange pharmacy employees sentenced

Two Essex County pharmacy technicians were sentenced Monday for participating in a scheme in which pharmacy owners and employees allegedly bought completed forms for HIV/AIDS drugs from indigent patients.
Prosecutors said the idea of the scheme was to have Medicaid pay for drugs that were never actually dispensed.
A third pharmacy technician also pleaded guilty illegal possession of prescription drugs.

Riders brace for transit fare hikes

Residents of Orange and East Orange will have to reach deeper into their pockets under fare increases which NJ Transit has proposed to offset a large budget gap.
NJ Transit officials announced Friday that the hikes would be the second part of a plan to close an estimated budget deficit of $300 million for 2011 and remainder of the 2010 fiscal years. The average increase for bus and train fares would be approximately 25 percent.

The East Orange Campus High School boys’ varsity basketball team was on the ropes.
Second-seeded Paterson Kennedy cut the Jaguars’ lead to 65-63 in the final minute. But the ninth-seeded Jaguars responded with the help of Tyrone Kornegay. East Orange Campus High School girls’ varsity head basketball coach Derrick Johnson has a message for young girls’ basketball players in East Orange.

After all, championships can be won at EOCHS, just like on March 8, as Johnson’s team defeated Montclair, 41-26, to capture the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association North Jersey Section 1, Group 4 tournament title.

EOCHS girls' hoops advance to State sectional final

Delisha Thompson scored 17 points and Ava Burke added 11 points to spark the 11th-seeded East Orange Campus High School girls' basketball team to a 47-41 win over No. 7 seed Randolph in the semifinals of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 4 tournament on March 6 in Randolph.
The teams were members of the Iron Hills Conference that was disbanded at the end of the 2008-09 school year. The Jaguars competed in the inaugural Super Essex Conference this season.

Rashod Isaac scored 16 points, and Mario Moody Jr. and Dominique Depts each had 14 points to lead the ninth-seeded East Orange Campus High School boys' varsity basketball team to a 79-37 win over No. 13 seed Montclair in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 4 tournament championship on March 6.
The Jaguars, who improved to 17-9, will face No. 2 seed Paterson Kennedy in the final on March 9.

Search for kidnapped baby continues

The search continues for 3-month-old Zara Malani-Lin Abdur-Raheem, the child authorities said was kidnapped from a grandmother’s apartment in East Orange two weeks ago. Her father, who has been charged with murder even though her body has not been recovered, has pleaded not guilty in two court proceedings.

Former Newark public official faces corruption accusations

An East Orange resident has been indicted on federal corruption charges related to his work as a former Newark deputy mayor.
Ronald Salahuddin was indicted Feb. 18 by a grand jury in Newark on allegations he used his position to benefit a business partner and himself with city demolition business. U.S. Attorney Paul J. Potential cuts in school aid worry districts

The looming reduction of school aid in the governor’s 2011 budget is sending shock waves through districts statewide. This is especially so for urban areas which rely on Trenton for the majority of funds needed to support their educational programs.

Johnson is NJAC Men’s Basketball Rookie of Year

New Jersey City University freshman power forward Isaiah Johnson of East Orange has been voted the 2009-10 New Jersey Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Year.
A four-time NJAC Rookie of the Week selection this season, the 6-foot-3 freshman proved to be a consistent performer who earned a starting role midway through the season and eventually started the final nine games of the regular season for the Gothic Knights (13-12).
