The East Orange Campus High School boys’ varsity basketball team was on the ropes.
Second-seeded Paterson Kennedy cut the Jaguars’ lead to 65-63 in the final minute. But the ninth-seeded Jaguars responded with the help of Tyrone Kornegay. The senior guard hit all six of his foul shots in the final 46 seconds of the game to secure the Jaguars’ 73-65 win in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association North Jersey Section 1, Group 4 final in Paterson on March 9.
Kornegay finished with 22 points and junior 6-foot-7 forward Mario Moody had a dominant game with 21 points, 18 rebounds and six blocks for the Jaguars, who won their first sectional title with their sixth straight win and improved to 17-9. The Jaguars will face Section 2 champion Plainfield in the NJSIAA Group 4 semifinals on March 11 at the Dunn Center in Elizabeth at 7 p.m. The NJSIAA Group 4 final is Sunday at the Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway.
Senior guard Rashod Isaac scored 16 points, and Moody Jr. and senior center Dominique Depts each had 14 points to lead the Jaguars to a 79-37 home win over No. 13 seed Montclair in the semifinals on March 6. Montclair fell to 13-13. EOCHS split the two Super Essex Conference regular-season meetings with Montclair this season. Montclair won the first meeting, 44-41, on Jan. 5 on a last-second three-pointer in Montclair. The Jaguars won the second meeting, 59-48, on Jan. 28 at EOCHS.
The Jaguars came away with an epic 77-70 double-overtime victory over top-seeded Passaic in the sectional quarterfinals on March 4 in Passaic. Moody (26 points) and Kornegay had (12 points) combined for seven of the team’s 12 points in the second overtime.
Moody had 13 points and 16 rebounds and Depts had 12 points in the 62-47 win at No. 8 seed Vernon in the first round on March 2.
Senior guard Muhamadou Kaba had eight points, six rebounds and five assists; and Kornegay had 10 points for the Jaguars.
Senior forward Terrell Whittle also had eight points and Issac had five points and five assists.
