EOCHS girls’ hoop team seeks summer progress

Head coach Derrick Johnson has always had the highest of expectations for his East Orange Campus High School girls’ basketball team.
So naturally, now that the Lady Jaguars won last year’s sectional championship, Johnson’s goals have only continued to grow.
“Our number one goal is to improve on what we did achieve last year,” he said.
And in an effort to accomplish that goal, Johnson said his team began several offseason activities.
“We’ll be working out at the gym, going to clinics and camps, competing in leagues and doing just about whatever we can to stay active,” he said.
In fact, Johnson said he presently had two teams taking part in a summer league, in which East Orange was hosting for both the girls’ and the boys’ teams.
“It’s a strong league with a lot of talented schools like Bloomfield, Elizabeth and St. Anthony’s here,” said Johnson, noting the league consisted of about six games plus the playoffs.
In addition, the varsity coach said his team attended the Kutztown University Athletes for a better education camp July 15-18 in Pennsylvania. Both the varsity and junior varsity teams attended the camp.
Johnson said he wasn’t concerned about wins or losses in the offseason.
“We’re more concerned with rhythm and timing and the summer is about staying in shape and staying positive,” said the coach, adding his summer plans for this offseason were actually less than usual. “For us, we have our eyes on bigger and better things for next season and, so right now, I just don’t want to see any of our girls getting hurt. Otherwise, we’d be playing even more. This year, however, I want them to relax and enjoy their summers because we’re going to hit the books and hit the courts hard when school reopens.”
In fact, to date, Johnson said EOCHS was likely to host a fall league as well in which two East Orange teams would participate.
Individually, the team is expected to be led by its two senior guards in Delisha Thompson and the coach’s daughter Shailah Johnson, who will start at the point.
Along with those players, Johnson said soon-to-be junior Precious Osagie, a guard, will also be expected to play a key role along with forward Teana Muldrow.
“We’ve got a really nice core coming back and we’ll have several newcomers to the program including one freshman phenom, who is just dynamite,” he said.
