Municipal officials said they will work to re-elect embattled Gov. Jon Corzine after President Barack Obama makes his final appearance in New Jersey.
Obama is scheduled to appear Sunday inside the Prudential Center for a campaign rally to urge residents to re-elect Corzine. The president also will appear in Camden on Sunday.
Obama appeared in Holmdel during the summer, then returned to New Jersey for a rally in Hackensack last week. During that program, Obama asked attendees to get “fired up” to help Corzine.
“Your voice can elect Jon Corzine governor once again of New Jersey,” Obama said. “I need you. Jon needs you. Getting health care done depends on you. Getting energy done depends on you. Improving our schools depends on you. So I’ve just got one question for you: are you fired up?”
Corzine’s re-election has been in doubt throughout the campaign, from the early days when Republican candidate and former U.S. Attorney Chris Christie had double-digit poll leads, to now as an independent candidate, Chris Daggett, is eating into Corzine’s and Christie’s support.
East Orange Mayor Robert Bowser said he planned to attend Sunday’s program and vote for Corzine on Tuesday.
“The man’s record of accomplishments during his time in office speaks for itself regardless of what anyone says, and that would be enough to get him re-elected even if he didn’t have the support of President Obama,” said Bowser. He also will be unopposed as he will soon begin a fourth 4-year term as mayor. “The fact that he does have the backing of the country’s first black president, who has said he needs him and everyone else who supported him in his successful run to becoming president to now support Jon Corzine, should put him over the top on Election Day.”
In neighboring Orange, Mayor Eldridge Hawkins Jr. said he will join supporters inside the Prudential Center. Hawkins agreed with Bowser on Corzine’s election prospects.
“The voters in Orange and the rest of Essex County are going to come out on Election Day and show their support for a governor who has made it possible for them to build new schools in their towns, enrolled thousands of uninsured children for healthcare and medical insurance benefits for the first time, and who has taken on the daunting and longstanding problems of property tax reform and balancing the state budget,” said Hawkins. “I’m going to vote for Corzine because of what he has done in office and what I know he wants to do for us in his second term.”
