More city students will face mandatory school dress code

By John Zucal, Managing Editor
When more than 10,000 students return to East Orange’s public schools Tuesday, they will do so in a district in which most of the students will arrive in school colors. That will include students in East Orange Campus 9 School, in which a mandatory dress code has been established.
Since early in the previous decade, the idea of “uniforms” in East Orange’s schools has expanded. Ten of the district’s 14 elementary schools, along with the two preschools, have a dress code.
District officials said that while dress requirements may differ within the district, including schools in which a “uniform” is optional, the major ones will not be touched. These include a ban on headwear except for medical necessities or religious observance, athletic clothing and excessive jewelry.
Color schemes for the city’s elementary schools include:
Dress code optional
• Banneker: White shirt or blouse, burgundy and gray plaid bottom.
• Bowser: White shirt or blouse, navy tie and pants, jumper or skirt.
• Carver: Yellow or gold skirt or blouse, dark blue pants, jumper or skirt.
• Jackson: White or light blue shirt or blouse, dark blue pants, jumper or skirt.
Mandatory dress code
• Cochran: White blouse or shirt, burgundy or gray sweater, gray pants or skirt, burgundy plaid shorts/skirt.
• Garvin: White or yellow blouse or shirt, dark blue pants, jumper or skirt.
• Gibson: Light blue blouse or shirt, dark blue pants, skirt or skorts.
• Houston: Yellow blouse or shirt, navy blue pants or skirts.
• Hughes: White blouse or shirt with high Chinese collars, red sweater, black pants, jumper or skirt.
• Louverture: White blouse or shirt, gray pants, burgundy or gray plaid jumper or skirt, burgundy tie.
• Parks: Light blue blouse or skirt, navy blue tie and pants, jumper or skirt.
• Tyson Elementary: White blouse or shirt, navy blue pants, jumper or tie.
• Wahlstrom: Light blue blouse or skirt, plaid: blue/gray and yellow or navy blue bottom.
