By Chris Sykes, Staff WriterMore than 2,000 students from New Jersey are expected to accept awards from an environmental organization during an event in Atlantic City.
“We are extremely pleased with the success of ‘Slam Dunk the Junk,’ and we are grateful to the many volunteers who have supported the program,” said Sandy Huber, executive director of the New Jersey Clean Communities Council. “We hope the program inspires even more residents and visitors to join our quest for a cleaner, healthier New Jersey.”
Many who participated in the campaign last year will be honored May 26-28 during the organization’s Clean Communities seminar and awards banquet in Atlantic City and Brigantine.
Officials with the organization announced last week that its “Slam Dunk the Junk” anti-litter campaign, launched last year, will continue through 2010.
During the last school year, Quamir Payton, then a student at Gordon Parks Academy, created the phrase, “Slam Dunk the Junk,” as part of a contest to promote environmental awareness and green technology. Payton won that competition and was named the official Environmental Ambassador for East Orange. Part of his prize was getting the chance to see 1,200 Newark students wear T-shirts with his slogan.
