The city of East Orange was well-represented at the second Irvington Neighborhood Health Walk on the weekend.
The event took place in Irvington Park on Lyons Avenue in that town and attracted the attention of Rosie Horner and Nerika Jenkins. Horner said she and her husband regularly walk in parks throughout Essex County for health and fitness reasons, and that is what attracted her to the Saturday event in Irvington.
“Walking is a routine that my husband, some neighbors and I do anyway, and we had just finished walking in Weequahic Park in Newark and I was driving by and I saw the walk taking place in Irvington Park and decided to stop,” she said. “I read about this when I was at Beth Israel and someone sent me a notice about it on Facebook, so that was twice that I heard about it and I wanted to see what it was all about. It was a really great event and I was glad that I was there and I just hope that more people come out and they really help turn it into a bigger event next year.”
And then there was Jenkins, an entrepreneur from East Orange who deals in natural healthy alternatives to skin care and beauty as well as nutrition. She said she was invited by the five founders of Irvington’s Neighborhood Health Walk to set up a stand and hawk her products for the potential benefit of all the event’s attendees.
“I was there advertising and promoting and Abdul, the one who sponsored the walk, invited me to come out here and show the people could see what we have to offer,” she said. “I think this health walk was a good thing because there are always going to be people who want to get in shape or lose weight and anything that we can do to help them achieve their goals is a good thing. I moved to East Orange from Brooklyn two years ago because I have family here and there were a lot of opportunities for me over here.”
Despite the fact that the temperature in the park was already somewhere in the mid-to-high 80s by Friday at 9 a.m., at least 60 health-conscious residents, visitors and their friends, children and invited guests filled the lawn opposite the tennis courts facing Lyons Avenue to stretch, flex and “get warmed up” prior to the walk. The actual walk itself consisted of a 2½-mile circuit around the park’s perimeter, starting at the tennis courts and winding its way around to Grove Street and back to the starting point.
