The school year for East Orange’s public schools opened Tuesday with several changes.
In addition to the individual changes students encountered when they entered their schools on Tuesday, several actions have occurred within the school district.
Gloria C. Scott will serve the district as its interim superintendent after Clarence Hoover retired at the end of July.
According to Business Administrator Victor Demming, Scott said she believed this school year presents many challenges for everyone in the district. It began the fiscal year July 1 with a budget that contained a $10 million less in state basic-education aid.
“That resulted in a reduction in force of over 200 of our finest teachers, who are responsible for providing our students with the tools necessary to keep them competitive in this global society,” Scott said. “Fortunately, we were able to call back over 80 of these teachers.
“While I’m aware some might approach this school year with feelings of trepidation, this major impediment will not deter the district from taking an aggressive stance toward empowering our students with the tools to obtain a quality education,” Scott added.
The district gained an addition to its directory of schools with the long-awaited opening of “ES 5” – now called the Benjamin Banneker Elementary School. Banneker, which will serve approximately 500 students in kindergarten through sixth grade, is located along South Clinton Street.
