State funds for road repairs coming to city

By John Zucal, Managing Editor
After the recent announcement of roadwork on Route 280, motorists on local streets in East Orange may find an improved conditions after state officials announced giving more than $100 million to municipalities for road construction projects.
The 20 municipalities in Essex County will share approximately $8.5 million with the most, $1.8 million, going to Newark for work on 10 streets.
Residents of East Orange will see $654,560 coming to the city for work, said Stephen Dilts, commissioner of the state Department of Transportation. Dilts added the city can use the funds for projects including road resurfacing or reconstruction and the installation of traffic signals.
With two weeks remaining in a tough re-election campaign, Gov. Jon Corzine said the grants will help municipalities and contractors retain employees for the projects.
“This additional infrastructure work benefits communities through enhanced street improvements and safety projects while creating and retaining more jobs for New Jersey’s hardworking families,” said Corzine in a statement concurrent with the department’s announcement.
According to department officials, roadwork will occur on parts of 15 city streets. The streets include Shepard, Hudson, North Munn, South Munn, Wilcox, Birchwood, Hollywood, Sussex and Ninth avenues; Halsted, Harvard, Washington and North Clinton streets, and Hoffman Boulevard.
Dilts said the funds also would provide relief for local taxpayers who would otherwise have had to fund projects through municipal taxes.
